The Seamstress' Cottage

She never wasted a thing.

Not the ribbon ends left on the floor, not the buttons collected in a chipped teacup, not the stories told by wood too worn to be wanted elsewhere.

Her days began with the steady rhythm of a treadle machine, punctuated by the hiss of steam from a battered iron. Curtains fashioned from flour sacks.

Neighbors swore she could take the remnants of their lives — the cloth, the timber, the scraps — and fashion them into something that belonged.

If you looked closely, you might catch her shadow in the doorway at dusk: small, wiry, fingers nimble, face lined with concentration. 

This is her cottage. A patchwork refuge. A biography written in wood and cloth.
