The Alpine Cottage

You would have liked her. The woman who lived here.

She rose before dawn, when the mountains were still wrapped in mist, and lit a fire from kindling stacked neatly beside the hearth. Her hands, always busy — knitting socks by lamplight, stirring a pot of stew that smelled faintly of thyme, carving initials into the doorframe as if to anchor herself against the long winters.

The cottage was small. Yet she made it live the biggest life ever— with songs sung softly while bread baked in the cast-iron oven, with geraniums blooming defiantly in the window box, with the careful mending of wool coats that had seen too many storms.

At night, she would rest in the corner bed tucked beneath a quilt she stitched from scraps of old skirts, listening to the faint clamor of cowbells drifting down from the high pasture. She never asked for more than what fit inside these walls.
