He returned home each evening dusted in red. Falun red. The copper mine painted everything it touched — his boots, his hands, and his lungs.
The cottage was small, built from pine cut in the surrounding forests and brushed with that deep rust-red pigment the town was known for. A single window caught the weak northern sun. Inside: a table sat next to a narrow bed with a woolen blanket, and a shelf lined with hand-carved wooden spoons.
By day, he descended into the darkness of the mine, his lamp flickering against walls that had swallowed generations. By night, he sat on the stoop of his cottage, pipe smoke curling into the cold air, staring at the endless horizon where the spruce forests whispered. His shoulders stooped, his hands calloused, but his spirit — still iron.
These are handcrafted cottages---no two are alike.
