The Shepherd's Christmas Barn

It smelled of hay.

Every dawn he led the flock out, staff in hand, his whistle carrying across the hillside. They followed him through the meadows. By nightfall, they returned to this barn. A refuge of timber and stone. A place where straw softened the floor and the air hummed with the quiet contentment of sheep at rest.

The barn was small, but to him it was home. A crooked ladder led to a loft where he slept. On storm nights, rain drummed against the roof, and he would listen to the sheep down below.

He asked for little. A lantern’s glow. A tin cup of broth. A fiddle tucked in the corner, its strings worn from songs played to no one but the flock.
